We promote fair and honest political discussion from all sides of the ideological spectrum While my own opinions and my contributors tend toward a more progressive view, that's not always the case. I ask people to comment freely and openly to promote fair discourse.

No Tax And Spend More Republicans Tuesday, February 07, 2006

One of the biggest arguments Republicans always make against the Democrats is they are "tax and spend." Well at least the Democrats have the sense to know to cover what they spend. Bush's budget has begun making the rounds and not only is it insane, it's irresponsible.

First, the defense budget hit a record $439 billion. That's a lot of money. Keep in mind that this doesn't include the spending for Iraq or Afghanistan. Now keep in mind, this money isn't going to all the military. The Army Corp of Engineers, the same people who maintain the levy system in New Orleans had their budget cut 11.2%. Gee.. can we murder a few more people on the Gulf Coast. If the levy system had been maintained correctly to begin with, we wouldn't be having these problems.

Then there's the fact that he wants to make these tax cuts permanent. Gee George, I think the treasury is saying this won't work. This is good old-fashioned, high quality deficit spending while cutting taxes. The administration maintains we have the economic foundation to handle this but I would argue otherwise. I've read too many economists who think this isn't the way to go. I'll.get more into the economic insanity later. In basic terms, think of it as spending far more than you thought possible and hoping you can afford the interest for the future. Better hope you get a raise. OH...nope... none of those. They are wanting to permanently get rid of those. Fortunately for us, in Washington, nothing is ever permanent.
