What Do The Democrats Need To Do? Sunday, November 13, 2005

The Democrats have some big questions in front of them. The main question is how to take control of the agenda. The Republicans are have mostly lost it. The budget is out of control. The war in Iraq is out of control. Corruption is abound in the government and high level members of the administration have either been indicted or are still under investigation.

The problem, as Edie point out in a previous comment, is that even though Republicans are looking lousy in the polls, the Democrats aren't that much better. The percentages are only slightly higher. What do they do to take control of the agenda.

They need to pick the budget and fuel costs. These issues will make the difference. Start talking about how to bring the budget under control and bring fuel costs down so people won't freeze this winter. Make sure gas is affordable too. Right now, the Republicans want to continue to lower taxes. No one wants to give more money to the government but at what cost? There are a lot of pork areas that can be trimmed. The Dems need to take the moral high ground and give up some of these projects, hammer down these costs and see about protecting the social programs. It could work.

I think there's more too it and I can go into those later but The Democrats must offer an appealing and reasonable alternative while working on a few wedge issues. @006 is critical and unless the Dems get it together, the status quo will remain intact.

The Democrats need some young, hungry, and angry candidates. Some new blood, who are not 70+ years old with 30+ years in the system. Someone not content to be elected and reelected for its own sake, but wanting to make changes. Someone with the fire that the Democrat leadership so conspicuously lacks.

During the Reagan terms, the GOP actually did this - and much of their rank-and-file Congress got their start then as just this sort of Young Turks.

Why can't the donkey?

I agree. They're not going to have a better opportunity, and the time has come to start addressing people's concerns as opposed to the petty partisan politics that dominates the public discourse.

Excellent blog btw.

As commented on HuffPo & Daily Kos, perhaps we need a new "American" agenda.
Not Republican, Not Democrat, but "American". We need a No Imcumbent re-elected campaign.

A True Clean Sweep. And yes, lets get a few 'Independents" in just to really stir the pot.

The degree of Necrosis in the body politic is truly sad. As much as I disliked Newt & Crew, they were in many cases, 'New Turks'. Obama and yes, to a lesser degree, Edwards and few others are less 'Bought & Paid for'.

Under Truth in Advertising laws, the current Administration should have to wear jumpsuits like a race car driver emblazened with 'Exxon' across chest, backs and sleeves. If only we could put term limits on on all the congress critters...

Ah well, enough rant for the moment. My poison Sacks for the fangs are feeling kinda empty. Doubt I've enough Venom left to kill a lame duck state legisalator, much less kill the already poison bloated White House toads.

To the new posters here.. welcome! We might not agree but we welcome the feedback.

Thanks for the comments Graham. The petty partisan politics is what makes the government go right now.

I agree we need to work on things but the liberals and conservatives aren't really willing to compromise at this point so it leaves the moderates to say "Shut up...this is what we're going to do!"
