Gas Prices Convert To Horsepower Tuesday, September 06, 2005

I found this story on Yahoo today. It's amusing and sad both at the same time.I recently just heard that a Marathon refinery, previously Ashland, in Eastern Kentucky was running at 50% capacity in order to get the price up. This story is unconfirmed, not that they would confirm it anyway. Enjoy the story:

MINOT, N.D. - Jim Jundt was so determined to rein in his spending on gasoline that he got out of bed early and rode his 14-year-old quarterhorse mare to work.

Jundt lives 15 miles south of Minot and works as a mechanic at Goodyear Tire & Auto Service in the city.

He said he and his co-workers had been talking about rising fuel prices, and he joked that he would ride his horse to work if gasoline ever hit $3 a gallon.

His co-workers laughed, but when the price at the pump soared to $3.20 last week, Jundt headed for the barn.

He said he was only five minutes late riding his mare, Patty, to work.

While he worked, Patty waited patiently, eating hay out of the back of a truck.

Response

This is a delightful story about a man and his horse is not only an anecdotal tale but quite true as well. The refinery is in Catlettsburg, Ky. The 50% capacity story is quite contrary to the stories being told to all the media regarding capacity levels running at 98%. It proves it's a load of bull. It shows the oil industry is nothing but a big cartel colluding on fuel prices to screw with the America economy and stick it to the American public. They're one of the reason we're in this war and they're the reason our economy will go in the tank. The problem is that it's not practical for people to boycott gasoline and they know that so they have everyone over a barrel and they're going to continue to stick it too them.

In my Cynicism (no relation to CyniCUS), I often think the ONLY way we're going to get aslternative fuel in Amerika is when Exxon has possession of enough Bio-diesel/Ethonal plants. The biggest problem is you can grow Bio-mass for conversion anywhere and don't require Billion dollar rigs to convert it.As this IS Kentucky, there are more than enough folks who still now how to create a 'Moonshine-Still'. The ease of creating small scale Ethanol sources must surely frighten the Mega-Corp Oil companies.
