Pat Robertson: Certified RightWing Nutjob Tuesday, August 23, 2005

So Pat Robertson thinks we should assassinate Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela. What a delightful thought. The United States can go back to the days of offing third world dictators(wasn't he elected) and supporting others. The cold war was an easier time for the U.S. when the enemies were pinko commies instead of religious whackos who want to murder... hold on a minute. What's Robertson do for a living? Here's the quote from his show the 700 Club, borrowed from MediaMatters:

ROBERTSON: There was a popular coup that overthrew him [Chavez]. And what did the United States State Department do about it? Virtually nothing. And as a result, within about 48 hours that coup was broken; Chavez was back in power, but we had a chance to move in. He has destroyed the Venezuelan economy, and he's going to make that a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent.

You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop. But this man is a terrific danger and the United ... This is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen. We have the Monroe Doctrine, we have other doctrines that we have announced. And without question, this is a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us very badly. We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.

Response

Ok now, let's put this in perspective. Pat Robertson, the founder of the 700 Club, a religious media organization designed to promote the evangelical viewpoint. Robertson ran for president at one time and has made strange comments in the past including nuking the state department and others. The classic right wing nutjob. Aren''t these the same types of people we deport back to Saudi or Libya or wherever?
So... anyway, shouldn't ABC Family just dump his show anyway. They dumped Bill Maher. Why not Pat?

From the quote you provided, we learn that Venezuela is a Muslim country with a Cold War Communist government; that the 19th century Monroe Doctrine (that said the Western Hemisphere was a keep-out area for European powers) means that the US has the right to whup-ass as we see fit in South America; and that, despite the general accusations of Communism and Islam, the one thing that specifically weighs on Pat's mind is that Venezuela could 'hurt us' by shutting off the oil - not by assault, Satanism, or whatever, and certainly not the hell-bound fate of all those Venezuelan Muslims left without Jeezus.

Ok people, i'm going to say this to you ONCE:

The reason for seperating Church and State is NOT so that you can have lots of religions (though that is an effect), nor for any sort of fundamentalist 'conspiracy theory' that you only want the church out so that you can screw, or do drugs, or be gay, or otherwise 'sin' freely.

The reason you need to seperate Church and State is that if you don't, each one manages to corrupt the other.
